Bioactive Glasses

SynThera has deep domain knowledge on a variety of silicate bioactive glasses, with core focus on 45S5 Bioglass®. Bioglass® is a one-component amorphous material made up of elements that also naturally occur in the human body, such as silicon, calcium, sodium and phosphorous. The elements of the composition are closely integrated into its material structure. Bioglass ® is a clinically proven biomaterial that demonstrates the ability to repair and regenerate hard tissues such as bone as well as soft tissues such as skin. This material finds wide application as an active ingredient in:

• Bone graft substitutes to repair and regenerate bone tissue lost due to injury or disease
• Desensitizing toothpastes and dental creams to combat dental hypersensitivity

In addition, Bioglass® is marketed as an active ingredient for a range of cosmetics products on account of various properties that work together to keep skin and nails looking young and healthy (reduction of redness and wrinkle visibility, anti-oxidant, mineral enrichment). Since its development by the legendary Prof. Larry Hench, Bioglass® has become one of the most widely used bioactive glass compositions worldwide for a variety of applications relating to tissue repair and regeneration. Believe it or not, Bioglass® is a byproduct of a great war, followed by a great misery (more information about the origins of Bioglass® can be found here:_____). We at SynThera Biomedical can offer Bioglass® in a range of particle sizes (nano to macro) and at various volumes depending on the customer’s requirement. We also have the capability to offer other compositions such as S53P4 and 13-93 bioactive glasses as well as customized bioactive glass materials depending on the customer specifications. Incorporated in 2015 in Pune, India, SynThera began life as a 1 person start-up that was incubated at Entrepreneurship Development Center (better known as “NCL Venture Center”), India’s largest science business incubator. The initial focus of the Company was on glass-based biomaterial technologies and products for bone tissue regeneration therapies. These therapeutic products lie at the interface of biology, material science and engineering and are fundamentally reliant on synergy between knowledge between these different fields. Thus, the name “SynThera” was conceptualized as a combination of the words “SYNergy” and “THERApy”. The Company was, and still is, India’s first and only company focusing on glass-based biomaterials.

Today, SynThera is recognized both nationally and globally to be a pioneering company in this domain. Our patents and peer-reviewed journal articles demonstrate our technological prowess. We have won multiple awards and recognitions at city, state, national and international levels and have worked with multiple industrial and academic partners from across the world on various projects. We have expanded our product and technology portfolio within the bioactive glass domain, and we have forayed into entirely new areas such as antimicrobial glasses for long-term disinfection.
